Scotland were“battered“ by Ireland in their Rugby World Cup opener regardless of“spot-on“ trainings, states full-back Stuart Hogg.
Gregor Townsend’s group delivered a tame display in Sunday’s 27-3 Pool A beating in Yokohama.
An Ireland side that scored four tries and pounced on their mistakes overpowered the Scots that were inaccurate.
„I’ve never been engaged in a Scotland camp the groundwork was spot-on,“ Hogg, 27, told BBC Scotland.
„Unfortunately we’ve just not awakened and we’ve been “
Scotland found themselves three tries along with 16 points after only 25 minutes, together with James Ryan, Rory Best and Tadhg Furlong the penalty their only riposte of Greig Laidlaw, constantly crossing. Much of the attacking success of Ireland stemmed from mistakes.
Andrew Conway killed in the second half after Ryan Wilson struck Jack Carty and a high ball clipped over a penalty to finish a miserable day for Townsend along with his guys.
The hefty conquer consigns Scotland to spot in Pool A. Samoa is tackled by them Monday, before finishing the group phase with a showdown with host country Japan and confronting the Russians.
„We spoke a lot throughout the week about beating and we coughed up the ball several times and gave away silly penalties,“ added Hogg, who won his first 70th cap on Sunday.
„We were all on the receiving end of five-metre maul line-outs and if Ireland get rumbling, they’re very, very tough to stop.
„We’ll find out and be better for this particular experience but in Test-match rugby you can not afford to let chances slip and sadly that one’s only slipped beyond us.
„We’ve got the quality within the squad to bounce back now. It is about reviewing this in a favorable light and making sure we understand from our errors.“
In the first of four World Cup warm-up suits, Scotland were dealt a similar beating by France at Nice, providing a dire performance.
Lock Grant Gilchrist admitted Sunday’s revealing bore hallmarks of the awful display.
„We moved on from Nice and had three much superior performances and believed we had been in a far better place,“ he explained.
„To have certain aspects of our game which were comparable was bitterly disappointing but we can also look at that and the way we responded. We conquer against France after then had two more positive results [wins over Georgia].
„We must do precisely the same as we did then. We now take our medication , we look at the way we could get better and we all need to be for another 3 games.“

If I had been a Scotland player, I’d be embarrassed by that performance. And I’d steer clear of social media since there are on there that give it laldy internationals.
What matters is how the players react in the game against Samoa.
