Neighborhood hero Mark Wilson expects England can thrill the fans like Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United when they face Italy in St James‘ Park on Friday.
It’s the first they’ve hosted within a couple of years out Twickenham, along with the first time England have played a Test match in the north-east.
Initially from Cumbria, Wilson is a“honorary Geordie“ having played over 200 occasions for Newcastle Falcons.
„North-east lovers want to get amused,“ Wilson told BBC Sport.
„That’s the big factor for them. [You think] back at the nineties if Newcastle football were at their best – that the fans just need to see entertainment.
„Hopefully we could entertain them on Friday night“
Wilson, 29, combined Newcastle’s academy as a 14-year-old before making his Falcons debut.
Following their last year, he will go to Sale on loan following the Rugby World Cup.
He believes another generation could inspire, and says English rugby have to continue to support the game in the north of the nation.
„It is important we get behind gaming in the north,“ he added.
„It is mad to think [there’s a Exam in Newcastle] – if I was a kid the only means to watch England was down in Twickenham.
„Thus for a lot of those north-east lovers they are all likely to be pretty excited about seeing England in their doorstep.
„St James‘ Park is a course place to play, and the atmosphere is wonderful. Hopefully people will come from their numbers and fill it.“
