It is refreshing to hear Cathal Murray discuss the honor of being selected to handle Galway Camogie’s fortunes at adult level.
He has barely missed a beat this year.
The results are there for everybody to see. In the physical conditioning, even in the strategic nous and preparation, in curing the players as elite athletes, even be that in providing post-training meals or even the utilisation of cutting-edge performance evaluation tools such as dwell GPS trackers, in the fact that those details have added up to appearances in both Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Senior and Intermediate Camogie Championships finals on Sunday.
All those details improve teams but they eliminate excuses too, delivering the message that what they’re doing is important and that they are worthy of training. That has undoubtedly had a part to play from the emotional improvement this year we’ve witnessed. And with each recovery from a stressful situation, the belief becomes stauncher.
Having garnered league honours and today using a date at Croke Park, things couldn’t be going much better.
„They could go a whole great deal better if we acquire the two of these,“ notes Murray, right. „However, the goal at the beginning of the year was supposed to receive two teams to the All-Ireland closing. The intermediates were beat by Cork annually at the semi-final and (the seniors) were beaten by Kilkenny. We always wanted to go a step farther this year to make a little bit of progress anyway.“
Murray was manager of Sarsfields hurlers if once their effort ended, he stepped to the fold but relinquished that role.
„If you will perform the job you need to do it right. The Camogie was always going to win this battle.“
That is saying something, provided that Sarsfields is his own team , that he played in an All-Ireland final at Croke Park at the conclusion of the debut season in March 1998, also has been player-manager whenever the East Galway ensemble acquired their last county name four years ago.
„What attracted me is you are getting the chance to be handling the Galway senior team. It’s a huge honor to supervise your county. And I would know the Camogie scene and these girls have been there or thereabouts in the past couple of decades. There was talent that is huge there.
„I viewed it as a huge challenge, go in and see how it went. The five weeks we were in it last season was tough because we came in. But looking at it in the view of this year, it was brilliant to receive them because you knew that an awful lot about those players. The players heard an awful lot about us too. You weren’t starting from scratch. We knew where we needed to change matters.
„It was brilliant to go back in November and December and start a correct pre-season. You’d that understanding of what went on. And you learn a lot.
„We handled the league seriously. We needed to win each game. It was a wonderful confidence booster. We had been under real stress daily. We’d led at the beginning and Cork got level right back. They had a big breeze behind them at the second-half. It was important we did not lose that match. We got a draw from that. We simply built a little momentum from the and won the league.“
That supplied evidence for the things they were doing any notion that they may be playing too well was dispelled with their mix of fluidity and resolution at Cork’s conquer.
„Our job is to make certain we have the most professional set-up,“ he continued. „Give the girls a stage they have to execute. We try and do every thing that we can do within reason.
„The power and conditioning is 1 place where we’ve really concentrated on. We did not feel we were as healthy as we needed to be. We certainly weren’t physically strong and we place an awful lot of effort to in November and December.
„Robbie Lane is fulltime strength and conditioning now in Galway, appearing following minors, intermediates and seniors. That’s tremendous for us. A enormous effort has been put in by him. We are a lot more strong. We are a good deal fitter. That’s revealing in our outcomes.
„It turned out to be a huge operation against Cork. I believe that the best portion of it was we surrendered in the first halfof the Our answer to that was brilliant. We constantly speak about that you’ll have setbacks but you need to reply at the approach that is very ideal to them. It is amazing that our response was excellent. Normally a group goes in their shell and admits a few more points. We reacted and our reaction was quite great.
„In all the games this year they responded. The second-half (of the quarter-final) against Waterford. In the league final against Kilkenny if Kilkenny came back into a couple of things we pushed on again. From the Cork game before on from the league, it turned into a huge thing. We’ve got confidence. Winning breeds confidence too.“
The intermediates have finished their end of the bargain and Murray has experienced some times combining the duties. The adventure of becoming player-manager, at which he needed to take care of delegate roles and different mental procedures should endure .
He has had to abandon some intermediate games and he wasn’t stressing though he had not believed the logistics of Sunday if this dialog takes place.
„It is the identical thing we’ve done all the time. You are focusing on the Intermediates when you are using the Intermediates. You’re concentrating on the Seniors, when you’re with the Seniors. That’s the thing. You need to keep the two separate. It’ll bring its own problems but it’s a great problem to have.“
In Terms of the main event, Murray is full of compliments for Kilkenny:
„Try and get a functionality is the principal factor for us and hopefully that will be good enough to attain it. That’s what we are looking to do. We beat them in the league.
„The big game was the championship first round this season. They beat on us and came down to Athenry. They have beaten us in’16; they’ve conquered us in’17 in the category. Last year, they beat us this year, and they have beaten us. That is five wins-in-a-row in the five championship games.
„They are a great team. They have severe forward; it is being flown by the likes of Katie Power Denise Gaule, Michelle Quilty in the moment. Grace Walsh and davina Tobin are two of the best defenders in the sport. They have enormous players“
Murray understands that he could not have asked any more from them in the previous 11 months and he has too though. The examination is now.
Galway are prepared.
