FIA race director Michael Masi has explained Charles Leclerc was issued together with F1’s equivalent of the’yellow card‘ rather than a punishment in his grasping struggle with Lewis Hamilton from the GP.
As Hamilton cranked up the pressure midway the Mercedes driver went round the run-off area but has been squeezed broad and attacked into the second chicane of Monza.
Race Control showed Leclerc a flag – the warning to’unsportsmanlike behaviour‘ – instead of simply just about any time penalty, as may have occurred previously.
Analysing the episode on the SkyPad together with Sky Sports F1’s Anthony Davidson after the race, Masi explained:“The rules remain with regards to a car’s width of room.

„It’s quite clear here that Charles has squeezed Lewis as well as consistent with what happened last weekend at Spa with Pierre Gasly, because it was the terrible sportsmanship flag, or the black-and-white flag, that was displayed to Car 16 for the move and the squeeze at the cruising area“
Even though the black-and-flag accessible round motorsport and has been in use, Masi states it will now be issued more frequently as means of an one-chance warning.
„For smaller infringements that are, let’s call it, a’professional foul‘ but don’t go past the line, we will be completely utilizing the black-and-white flag more and longer,“ he explained.
„It’s a sign to everyone that the driver’s on notice because you only get one for the race. In the event you do it , the drivers have been advised that any other infraction will be referred to the stewards.“
The shift in strategy?
Amid long distance calls to allow motorists to race more openly in situations that are wheel-to-wheel, with no penalties being implemented, Masi states teams and drivers have helped formed the strategy and plans for greater use of the’card‘.
„If there was resultant contact [from the Leclerc and Hamilton episode ] we would have looked at it in a bit more detail, however efficiently under the’let’s race philosophy‘ that the groups, the F1 Group, both the motorists and the FIA have worked collectively on during the year, and giving the teams that the advice at the last event in Spa, we will be using the black and white flag more often – in their request I have to state,“ additional Masi.
„That was a prime incident where everyone lasted black and white flag, motorsport’s variant of this yellow card“
