A Couple of the welterweight titles will be unified on September 28, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, as Shawn”Showtime” Porter collides with Errol”The Truth” Spence Jr..
The IBF welterweight champion, Spence Jr., is a -900 favored in this struggle with all the WBC titleholder, Porter, coming back at +550.
It comes as no surprise to watch Spence as a favorite inside this bout that’s par for the course recently for the New York native. The Truth was a -450 preferred against -300 from Kell Brook and Mikey Garcia to win the IBF title in 2016.
On the other hand, this is the second time in the previous three fights that Porter was an underdog. He shut at +125 from Danny Garcia for the vacant WBC title in 2018, a bout he won. Showtime was also an underdog in his own departure by Keith Thurman for the WBA belt in 2017, a struggle where Porter lost by decision. ??
Porter has instincts and does a wonderful job at staying light slipping punches and allows his hands fly. His footwork is outstanding and he uses it get in close to throw flurries of punches, overcoming his height as well as to create his enemies overlook. He moves since stopping Andre Berto at 2017, almost as good as he does at the first, but he lacks true knockout power with not earned a win in that fashion.
Spence is good at preserving distance and using his jab to set up his crime and keep his opponents. With the use of his jab until he begins to allow his left hand fly behind it which puts them at a bad way, he piles on the punches and wears on his foes. Of The Truth’s 25 wins, 21 have been by knockout and his decision win Mikey Garcia in March was his very first battle to go to the judges’ scorecards since 2014, a period of 11 struggles.
I think that Porter is going to get some difficulties closing the distance within this fight as Spence fires out that jab so quickly and powerfully that it ought to cease Showtime in his tracks. Strategy and power thin in favour of Spence although porter might have a speed advantage inside this bout.
Prediction: Errol Spence Jr. (-900) via decision
