Padraig Harrington has warned prospective members of his European Ryder Cup team there will be“no excuses“ for not playing at the BMW PGA Championship next year.
Qualifying for the European group starts this week and finishes at Wentworth following September, soon before Harrington takes his side to defend the Ryder Cup against Steve Stricker’s Team USA.
Harrington is delighted to observe a stellar area teeing it up in the West Course this week, headlined by Rory McIlroy, and he’s intent on watching more of the exact same a year from today when rankings on his group for Wisconsin are likely to be picked.
„This really is a huge part of why it’s beginning this week and it’s finishing at the BMW PGA Championship,“ said Harrington, soon after unveiling Robert Karlsson as his first assistant captain. „That will be the flagship event in Europe and also the players develop and accept it.
„This is our biggest European event, it’s the one which that you are interested in being there. This year you are guaranteed to get a really strong field, which isn’t only important, but it will be extremely significant come this time that we possess the best players playing the last event.
„If you can find places still to be determined, each participant will be going up against other good players this week and you also will not be any excuses. You can not type of turnaround and say’well, I don’t wish to come to the event; it is not enough‘.
„This ultimately will cause no explanations following year, as everyone will be here who wants to get on the team. And it’s a fine golf course today, it is now. They’ve made the enhancements and everyone loves it and it’s a real solid golf course and it will create fine play, which is exactly the type of golf course we are going to be analyzing the players around.“
Harrington also highlighted the significance of having rookies on the team, with the likes of Matt Wallace and Open champion Shane Lowry among those likely to make their Ryder Cup debuts in Wisconsin.
„We want rookies,“ Harrington added. „How do you have the buzz and atmosphere on the team? You want men there simply thrilled to be excited and there, and the older men get the ability handle and to assist a young player. That’s the beauty of this Ryder Cup, to possess rookies on the staff.
„Certainly you wouldn’t wish to enter there with 12 rookies and if two rookies qualify, I’ll be choosing three experienced guys. We will not be heading in using 12 rookies, because the rookies have made it for Europe over recent 29, however you want a great mixture.
„These are the men that come out and they shine. I am hoping for a wonderful balance on the team, and whatever I buy, the nine guys who qualify will probably deserve to be there, plus it is my job to choose three guys to balance them out, and then it’s myself, Robert and another vice-captains‘ jobs to get the maximum from these when we’re there throughout the week“
