Padraig Harrington has warned prospective members of the European Ryder Cup group there will be“no excuses“ for not playing at the BMW PGA Championship next year.
Qualifying for the group begins finishes and this week at Wentworth September, shortly before Harrington takes his side to Whistling Straits to defend the Ryder Cup against the Team USA of Steve Stricker.
Harrington is delighted to observe a stellar area teeing it up at the West Course this week, headlined by Rory McIlroy, and he’s intent on watching more of the exact same a year from today when rankings on his team for Wisconsin are likely to be picked.
„This is a enormous part of why it’s beginning this week and it’s finishing in the BMW PGA Championship,“ said Harrington, shortly after unveiling Robert Karlsson as his first assistant captain. „Here will be the flagship event in Europe along with the players turn up and take it.
„This is our biggest European event, it’s the one that you are interested in being there. This year, you’re sure to have a discipline, which is not only important, but it’ll be extremely significant come this time a year ago that we have the best players playing with the previous occasion.
„If there are places still to be determined, every player will be going up against other very great players this week and there won’t be any excuses. You ca turnaround and say’well, I do not want to come to this event; it is not big enough‘.
„This ultimately will result in no excuses following year, as everyone will be here who wants to get on the team. And it is a golf course that is fine now, it is. They have produced the enhancements and everyone loves it and it is a genuine good golf course and it will produce fine drama, which is precisely the sort of golf course we’ll be testing the players around.“
Harrington also emphasized the importance of having rookies on the group, with the likes of Open champion Shane Lowry and Matt Wallace among those likely to make their Ryder Cup debuts.
„We want rookies,“ Harrington added. „how can you get the atmosphere and buzz on the team? You want guys there simply thrilled to be eager and there, and the older men possess the capability manage and to help a young player. That’s the beauty of The Ryder Cup, to have rookies on the staff.
„Clearly you would not wish to enter there with 12 rookies and when nine rookies qualify, I will be picking three seasoned guys. So we won’t be going in with 12 rookies, because the rookies have created it however you want a wonderful mix.
„Those are the men that come out and they all shine. I’m hoping for a nice balance on the group, and everything I buy, the nine guys who qualify will probably deserve to be there, plus it is my job to choose three guys to balance them out, after which it’s myself, Robert and the other vice-captains‘ tasks for the most from them when we are there throughout the week“
