Padraig Harrington has warned prospective members of the European Ryder Cup group there’ll be”no excuses” for not playing in the BMW PGA Championship next year.
Qualifying for the European team starts ends and this week at Wentworth September, shortly before Harrington takes his side Whistling Straits to defend the Ryder Cup contrary to the Team USA of Steve Stricker.
Harrington is thrilled to find a stellar field teeing it up at the West Course this week, headlined by Rory McIlroy, and he’s intent on watching more of the exact same a year from today when positions on his team for Wisconsin are likely to still be determined.
“This really is a huge part of why it’s starting this week and why it’s ending in the BMW PGA Championship,” said Harrington, shortly after unveiling Robert Karlsson because his first assistant captain. “Here will be the flagship event in Europe and the players develop and accept it.
“That is our largest European event, it’s the one which that you want to be there. This year you’re certain to have a strong field, which isn’t only important, but it’ll be important come this time that we have the very best players playing with with the previous occasion.
“If you can find places still to be determined, each player will likely be going up against other great players who week and there will not be any explanations. You can not type of turn around and say,’well, I do not want to come to this event; it is not large enough’.
“This will lead to no explanations following year, as everyone will be here who wishes to get on the group. And it is a golf course that is nice today, it is now. They have produced the enhancements and everyone loves it and it’s a real good golf course and it will create fine play, which is precisely the kind of golf course we’ll be testing the players on.”
Harrington also emphasized the significance of getting rookies on the team, with the likes of Matt Wallace and Open winner Shane Lowry among those likely to make their own Ryder Cup debuts.
“We want rookies,” Harrington added. “How do you receive the atmosphere and buzz on the team? You need men there simply thrilled to be excited and there, and then the older men get the capacity manage and to help a young player. That is the beauty of The Ryder Cup, to have rookies on the group.
“Clearly you would not need to enter there using 12 rookies and if two rookies qualify, I will be choosing three experienced guys. We won’t be moving in with 12 rookies, because the rookies have made it for Europe over the years however you desire a mix.
“These are the men that come out and they all glow. I am hoping for a nice balance on the team, and everything I get, the two guys who qualify will deserve to be there, and it is my job to pick three guys to balance them out, after which it is myself, Robert and the other vice-captains’ jobs to get the most from these when we’re there during the week”
