As the tables turned Mercedes to secure a surprise front-row lockout sebastian Vettel procured a pole location for the Japanese GP in Sundays delayed qualifying.
In a session which was pushed by 19 hours due to the Super Typhoon Hagibis, Vettel aced Q3 in the sun with two excellent laps – that were both faster than anything his opponents handled – to claim his first pole as the Canadian GP, and Ferraris fifth in a row.
The race starts at 6.10m on Sky Sports F1, with build-up in 4.30am.
Were quite surprised to be truthful, explained Vettel. We didnt expect to have the front row. So very happy. The car was incredible. Nevertheless, its just part of the task done.
Charles Leclerc, whod taken the four sticks for the Scuderia, was second and two-tenths slower than his team-mate – but reluctantly edged out Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton.
